The 5 most surprising questions in 20 years of Architecture
In twenty years as an Architecture Studio, we occasionally encounter questions that catch us by surprise.
Some make us smile, others invite us to reflect deeply on the value of our work.
Here are the five most unusual questions, and how we’ve responded…
1. “Can you design my house exactly like this one on Pinterest, but with half the budget?”
This is one of the most common requests in the social media era, which has democratized access to spectacular interior images, but has also created sometimes unrealistic expectations.
Our response: “We can certainly use that design as inspiration and starting point, adapting it to your specific needs and available budget.”
Indeed, quality architecture is about creating personalized solutions that work for your space and lifestyle.
2. “Can I move this load-bearing column because it blocks my view of the TV?”
The tension between aesthetics and structure is a classic in architecture.
Our response: “Load-bearing structures exist for a fundamental reason: to safely support the building. Removing or moving them involves complex and costly interventions that aren’t always possible.
However, we can creatively rethink the layout of surrounding spaces, repositioning elements like the TV or living area to optimize usability without compromising structural integrity.”
3. “Is it really necessary to comply with all these regulations?”
Building regulations can seem restrictive, and some consider them bureaucratic obstacles rather than guarantees of safety and quality.
Our response: “Yes, regulations are our ally. But we can move creatively within these parameters to realize your vision without compromising legal compliance.”
Our role is also to mediate between aspirations and technical requirements, finding solutions that respect both.
4. “Can we eliminate all interior walls? I want a completely open space.”
The concept of open space has become extremely popular, but is often interpreted without considering its practical implications.
Our response: “Many non-load-bearing walls can be removed, creating more fluid and bright spaces.
However, we must consider several factors: the presence of structural elements that cannot be eliminated, acoustic needs, visual privacy, and practical issues such as efficient climate control.”
This request allows us to explore intermediate solutions like sliding walls, partial dividers, or level differences, which create spatial distinctions without complete physical barriers.
5. “Can you complete a renovation project in two weeks?”
Unrealistic timeframes are a constant in the world of architecture, probably fueled by television programs that compress months of work into 60-minute episodes.
Our response: “Quality architecture requires time, precision, and care. Excessively compressing these steps leads to compromises on quality or higher costs.
However, we can structure the process in phases, allowing you to progressively use different areas of the house during the work.”
Translating Desires into Concrete Solutions
The truth is that all these requests, however unusual they may seem at first glance, arise from authentic needs and desires.
Our mission as architects is to understand them deeply and translate them into concrete, sustainable, and functional solutions.
Unusual requests often push us to find the most innovative solutions, redefining the boundaries of what is possible within our profession.
