Inclusive Playground for all Children
In recent years, the quality of life for children with disabilities has made enormous strides forward in Italy.
However, even where integration levels are high, it remains difficult for these children to experience informal and playful moments of integration with their peers: it’s rare to find them in playgrounds playing and having fun after school.
Often, the attention of family, services, and community focuses on the “disability” rather than the child, directing energies toward activities considered “useful” because they are “rehabilitative.”
The Project
Creating a playground that is accessible and usable by everyone materializes these children’s desire and right to experience moments of integration with their peers, without having to face the barriers that a regular playground might present.
Among the most significant projects we’ve developed is a public work included in an urban development plan for the Milan metropolitan area: an inclusive playground.
This concept, though presented but not implemented, represents a tool to improve people’s lives by promoting social inclusion.
Beyond Barriers
The project, covering approximately 900 square meters, was conceived to answer a fundamental question: how can we truly guarantee all children the right to play and socialize?
The answer translated into an innovative design that perfectly aligns with Article 7 of the “UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” going beyond mere compliance with technical standards (EN 1176 and EN 1177) to create a truly inclusive space.
A Multisensory Journey
The concept features various interconnected thematic areas, developed at different heights, each designed to stimulate different senses and abilities:
- A “Land and Water” area with sand pit, fountain, and excavator games
- A sound zone with percussion musical instruments
- An educational sensory space with tactile panels and climbing routes
- A multidisciplinary motor skills area with ropes, nets, and slides
- A “dynamic” zone at the highest level, accessible through differentiated paths
The real innovation? No separation between play areas: all children can truly play together, without barriers.
But the project goes beyond play: it also includes social and relaxation zones with seating and tables, designed as meeting points for the entire community.
A place where social integration can happen naturally, through play and shared experiences.
